WESTMARK*INC. Public Telephone Operations

FREQUENTLY-ASKED QUESTIONS:

WHY SHOULD I HAVE A PAYPHONE?

People need public telephones. They need to keep in touch with friends, family, and business associates. They need to get information. Many people need reliable, low-cost communication without the large investment and technical problems common to portable or wireless phones. A pay phone earns money. A pay phone attracts customers to your business. It shows your customers that you care about their convenience. It discourages customers and employees from asking to use your business phone. In short, a pay phone can be a significant benefit.

HAVE WIRELESS PHONES REPLACED PAYPHONES?

Yes and No. FCC statistics indicate that about 40% of the U.S. population have cellular telephones; about 95% have home telephones. This means that for 60% of us, payphones are necessary when we're away from home. For 5% of us, payphones are necessary even when we're not traveling. Payphone users live in the cities; they travel the highways; they shop; they eat in restaurants. Are your customers payphone users? Offer them a payphone.

WHERE?

Westmark offers public telephone service in Northern New Jersey. You'll find our payphones in Bergen, Hudson, Passaic, Essex, Morris, Union, Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Warren, and Sussex Counties. You'll see them on street corners, in the parking lot, on the sidewalk, in the store, at the restaurant, the bar, the strip-mall, the laundromat, the gas station, or the shopping center... wherever the public needs telephone service.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

NOTHING! We will install a pay phone on your premises at NO COST! We own the equipment, and we maintain it. It gets its own telephone line, and its own telephone number. We pay the telephone company for the telephone line and for the calls we sell. We pay the insurance, taxes, regulatory and permit fees. We keep the phone clean and working. All we ask is that the phone be visible and accessible to the public.

WHAT DO I GET FOR IT?

We share the revenue with you. We collect the coin from the phone. We also collect money from the long distance companies. They pay us for collect calls, calls charged to credit cards, and calls made with pre-paid phone cards. We then pay the telephone bill. What is left is our profit. We share this with you, the owner of the premises. You receive a monthly commission.

HOW MUCH CAN I GET?

A typical outdoor payphone on a busy street corner pays $35 - $75 per month. Some phones pay as much as $150 per month. An indoor payphone in a low-traffic location may pay as little as $5 per month. We provide a computer-printed statement every month showing exactly how much coin and other revenue we received, and what we paid the telephone company. The statement is mailed with your check, the first week of every month.

EMERGENCY SERVICE

WESTMARK pay phones provide access to 911 at no charge.

DIRECTORY ASSISTANCE: Local and National

WESTMARK pay phones provide local and national directory-assistance service at no charge, even if the caller doesn't know the area code.

CAN I REPLACE MY BUSINESS TELEPHONE?

Yes. If you make few calls, you could save money by using a pay phone in stead of your business telephone. Save $20 - $70 each month on the phone bill. Pay only for each call as you make it, and get part of that back in your monthly commission check. You'll also get paid when your customers use the payphone. Turn an overhead cost into a money-maker!

For an indoor payphone, we can provide a non-dial extension behind your counter or in your office, at no charge. You may then answer incoming calls where you are working.

WHAT ABOUT MAINTENANCE?

At WESTMARK, we monitor your payphone daily with our computer systems. If something goes wrong, we'll know about it and we'll come and fix it. We also offer a toll-free number you can call to report any problems. We are a local company with technicians on the road. We take care of most problems the same day.

I'VE HEARD OF OVERCHARGES ON CREDIT-CARD CALLS

WESTMARK pay phones use Verizon operator services. Calls sent collect, or billed to credit cards, are handled by Verizon Select Services operators at their tariffed rates. We don't add a surcharge. We do not use the alternative operator service providers. We don't gouge your customers. Our prices for coin calls are less than those charged at Verizon or Sprint pay phones. We want our public telephone customers to come back and call again!

SO HOW DO I GET ONE?

Call WESTMARK at 1-800-383-9978. Or email us. We'll meet you at your convenience, and NO COST. We'll help you decide: Should we allow incoming calls? Should we replace your existing telephone service? Where is the best place for your pay phone? Indoors? On the wall? On a shelf? Outdoors? On the building? On a free-standing pedestal? (Typical payphone mountings are shown to the left.) Do you want a PHONE sign? Then we'll do the rest.
